Dear family and friends, Aug 15, 2010
Kumusta ? How are you? We are doing great and getting excited to come back to America. We have not received our flight plans yet. We will be arriving home Sept 16, 2010. Our home ward has set the date for us to speak in church for Sept 26. It think church starts at 11am, but not sure. We can let you know for sure. We are trying hard to finish up some of the projects we started here in La Carlota. Elder Adams has been quoted saying “It is a never ending story.... “ We thought coming back to La Carlota we would find the branches doing better than when we left. Surprise! They have not progressed much. Pres Tobias said it is because they don’t have the Senior couple missionaries to account to. Since we have been here Pres Tobias has had several training meetings with the District leaders. Pres has had Elder Adams helping give the training. Pres had given them deadlines to have the things done by. I think seeing us helps motivate them to do it. The goal of the church area leaders is to make La Carlota a stake by 2011. La Carlota has some of the requirements already, only lacking in full tithing payers, priesthood holders, and meeting attendance. The branch members and full time missionaries are focusing on activating the less active. They have been visiting them and inviting them to come back to church. The members have been reminded to offer a hand of fellowship when they come back to church. Today I was involved in a district visiting teacher workshop. It started 30 mins late which wasn’t too bad. Most of the members came about 1 hour late. So by the time the bulk of the members came they missed the talk about visiting teaching. They had role playing about the right way to visit teach and the wrong way, then a open forum to comment on it. Next was the workshops: a nurse showed how to give a sponge bath to an infant using a 3 month old baby boy, a different nurse talking about dengere fever: signs to look for, how to treat the signs and how to prepare meals in a blender so the patient will eat food( most of the members don’t have blenders so I finally ask what to do if no blender was available. She told how they could mash the cooked food. I then showed how to cook in the wonder box. The language barrier really was a problem today. They had a hard time figuring out how to cook without fire. I had to get some of the members to translated and they finally got the idea. I had one Elder and I made to give away with a drawing of all the names of the sisters there. The sister that won it was excited but not sure how to use it. The instruction are in English and she only speaks very little English and understands very little. I showed them how to cut out the pattern with 100% cotton material or cotton flour sacks, sew them together with the district sewing machine if they don’t have one, and fill with rice hulls (labhang). A lot of people grow rice here so the rice hulls are very available and free. Right now as I am writing this email we finished cooking Taco soup and apple pie filling is cooking in the wonder box/bag. We have used ours about 4 or 5 times so far since we made it the last part of July. Each branch had their own lunch and ate as a branch. Some of the branches just went home since they have very little money in the budget not enough to fix a meal. Elder Adams went out to Pontevedra , a town about 20 mins from La Carlota to help with a mini mission day. They assigned pairs to go out and visit the less active, to invite them to church. It was a wonderful experience. It is now Aug 23 and we are finally getting this emailed. Our computer wireless internet is not working so I finally put it on the flashdrive and brought it to the internet place. We love you all and are excited to be with you all again! Love Elder and Sister Adams ps. us with most recent Elder Adams, sunset, Sister whitehead and I having a sprite, zone conference
